Line Up! Going Green in a New Way

We ran across an interesting article on what each one of us can do to make Going Green something meaningful in Eureka Springs. It’s about hanging our clothes out to dry instead of using dryers.

There’s even a web site given over to the project, Project Laundry List . They use humor, harangue and any other thing to get the idea across. –Humor plays a big part, as in their quote at the top from Benjamin Franklin:

“We must all hang together, or most assuredly we will all hang separately.”

Ordinarily we’d suspect a project when The Wall Street Journal supports it, as they do here. The WSJ hard news is unbeatable. Their editorialists hang out in the swamps surrounding good sense.

This time, though, the WSJ done good. There are lots of others, like Helen Caldecott, who have lined up. Check out the right column at Project Laundry List, down just a bit from the top.

There’s no reason to accept the idea that hanging our clothes out is all that needs to be done. One of the favorite strategies of those who fight social good is to try to divert us from systematic change by saying we’re not doing enough individually. That’s been particularly true of those who oppose environmental measures. You remember the mantra: people throw pop bottles out of car windows. Clean that up first, then we’ll address environmental degradation, they have been known to say.

This is an individual action but it is worth doing– so long as we don’t spend all of our time hanging out with our clothes instead of attending to the broader work that needs to be done, environmentally and otherwise here in Eureka Springs.
